IBN Information Brochure (PDF)

The Institute of Building Biology + Ecology Neubeuern IBN was founded in 1983. It grew out of the work of the “Arbeitsgruppe Gesundes Bauen + Wohnen” (Work Group Healthy Building + Living) since 1969 and the former “Institute of Building Biology,” since 1976.

Building Biology Standard

Standard of Building Biology Testing Methods SBM (PDF)

The Standard gives an overview of the physical, chemical and biological risks encountered in sleeping areas, living spaces, workplaces and properties. It offers guidelines on how to perform specific measurements and assess possible health risks. All testing results, testing instruments and procedures are documented in a final written report. In case potential problems are identified, an effective remediation strategy is developed.

Building Biology Evaluation Guidelines (PDF)

The Building Biology Evaluation Guidelines are based on the precautionary principle. They are specifically designed for sleeping areas associated with long-term risks and a most sensitive window of opportunity for regeneration. They are based on the building biology experience and knowledge and focus on achievability. In addition, scientific studies and other recommendations are also consulted.

As early as 1989, the EU issued a guideline on occupational health as part of its Framework Programme that went beyond mere accident prevention and instead demanded health prevention. Seven years later, the EU guideline „on the minimum safety and health requirements for work with display screen equipment” was adopted as federal law in Germany. Here in Canada, most provinces can only dream about such things.

The Breathing Wall (PDF)

The breathing wall concept goes back to Max von Pettenkofer (1818-1901), one of the most accomplished hygienists of his time and the pioneering founder of occupational and environmental hygiene sciences, as we know it today. He was instrumental in stopping the cholera epidemics in Munich, one of the largest cities in Germany, during the second half of the 19th century. By initiating the construction of a central water supply and sewage treatment system, public health improved greatly and he reached celebrity status.
